Introduction to the Product
The applicator is a very simple product so I was hesitant to write a review on the product as I was worried I would not have enough to say. However, this tool does simplify one aspect of painting I often do not enjoy. For some talented people masking is an unnecessary step for me it is essential. What the applicator product claims is that it makes prep faster and easier compared to using your hand. I can confirm that prep is faster using the applicator product than by hand but the product comes with some caveats.
The Imperfect Product
The image above showcases the imperfectness of the product. Below I will also attach two images for a better idea of this flaw but essentially the plastic casing of the product does not allow for the painters tape to be applied perfectly flush with the trim. Having the tape flush with the trim is essential to obtaining a good look when finished so if there was not a way to resolve this flaw the product would be mostly useless.
Luckily I found a solution which can be seen in the rightmost picture below. The solution is to angle the applicator slightly which allows the tape to be applied closer to the trim. The only drawback with this method is the applicator is not securing down the tape which means a person has to use their other hand to apply the tape down. The method is not as convenient as simply applying the tape but it does result in the tape being applied better and is still easier than applying solely by hand.
Why The Product is Worth It
There are three reasons I could come up with for owning the applicator. The first reason is that scissors are no longer needed for masking. Not needing scissors speeds up the process because I do not have to stop and grab them to cut the tape. My second reason for owning the applicator is that it spins which makes rolling out the tape easier and faster. The last reason is the product is cheap at only ten dollars. The applicator is not much more expensive than the tape it comes with and so investing in the product is not asking much.
The Conclusion
I do find it hard to recommend a plastic gadget much like how people recommend the often-hated avocado slicers but this product has been a joy to use and so that is why I recommend it. I understand the product is niche and not for everyone but considering the price I would say the applicator is worth trying. If you do end up buying it leave a comment below as I would love to know your thoughts on it.
