The Prelude
A while back in a blog post I mentioned how I was unsure how to fix a rather dangerous outlet. I had assumed the only way to fix the outlet was to replace the electrical box that was too far recessed. However, I found out from a Reddit post in r/diy that box spacers exist.
The box spacers would have made the outlet more stable but the electrical would have been exposed. Luckily in the same post, someone commented on this issue and the solution to my problem was to buy a box extender.
One Solution but Two Problems Fixed
The First Problem Fixed
Okay, so these box extenders are awesome and I totally had no idea they existed. I bought two versions, one of which was a sturdier blue version and a thinner but longer extending white version. The blue extender was the better-built one but I could not use it for either of the two problems that I fixed.
I went with the white box extender for both of my issues as with the bedroom outlet it was longer and thinner which allowed it to fit inside the narrow box.
The Second Problem Fixed
The issue with the bathroom GFCI was not due to the box being too recessed but that the box was too close to the hot terminal on the GFCI which caused arcing (electrical transferring to the metal outlet box).
To fix this I used another white box extender to block the wires as the blue plastic extender was too thick. Overall the plastic extension box worked flawlessly to prevent the arcing and was a much better idea than using electrical tape to prevent the problem.
Although the second blue style extender was not used it was not completely without its use. The box did come with a lot more screw lengths which helped me with the first problem of extending out the box.
Where I am at with the other Projects
So I have started more projects than I can finish which is why there is a delay in projects being done and thus blog posts. I find that product reviews get more traffic so if there is some interesting product that you would like me to review please feel free to leave the suggestion in the comments.
The first project which is the bathroom sink is coming along nicely. I have patched the drywall and mounted the vanity to the wall now I am just finishing up the plumbing to the sink. To finish the project I need for the project is a p-trap adapter as I have a threaded adapter but it is not specific to a p-trap and as far as I am aware will not work.
The second project is the light fixture which should have been easier but the hickey allowed the threaded nipple to crush the wires and so now I am rewiring the entire light fixture using a broken extension cord I had lying around. I have attempted to use shorter nipples so that the wires have room and will not get crushed but the threads on the original threaded nipples are ever so slightly different.
Other DIY Annoyances
One thing I have kept from including on the blog site is my work on cars but currently, I have cars being repaired so they are taking a considerable amount of my time away from making posts. I might do an auto blog to see if there is any interest in car content as I have a decent amount to talk about.
One of the cars I am working on is simple enough to fix as it just needed the tie rods I installed to be adjusted. The other car will take more work as I have had to remove the intake manifold to check fuel injectors and other components which could be causing it to have a rough idle.
To the Conclusion
I hope to have a blog post out sooner than the gap between this one and the last on either the light fixture or the bathroom plumbing. Additionally, I might also do a blog on my automotive adventure if I run into any more problems with the two home projects. I hope the product review has been helpful and that you all stay safe and have a good day.
