What I Got Wrong

So I had thought that an impact driver with a masonry bit would make quick work of the concrete. I even linked to a masonry impact-rated bit and told people they could use one of those with an impact driver. This information is wrong and in fact, a hammer drill is the only way to drill into masonry.

The Journey which Led Me to the Error

I was installing a metal handrail for my wife’s grandmother and I was making little progress with the drill I had. My solution was to buy an impact-rated masonry bit as I recommended in the previous article. The advice was wrong as I quickly discovered that the impact driver does not function in the same way as the hammer setting on a drill. I nearly burnt up the impact driver I was using so please do not listen to my previous advice and only use a hammer drill.

The Mistake that Defines This Blog

As I have said previously I am not an expert and only offer my advice from my experience. The blog is my journey of learning home improvement and so many more mistakes will be sure to appear. I’ll do my best to correct the mistakes and to showcase them so people do not make the same mistakes.

My New Recommendation

I will edit the previous post to avoid misinformation and direct people to this one to see my updated recommendations for masonry. Here are three hammer drills that will work for any masonry project and also some drill bits that will be needed.

What’s to Come

I wanted to create a blog by itself for visibility sake. However, stay tuned as I will post in the coming days a blog on the handrail install I did and my experience with it.

Here is the handrail I will be installing as a sneak peek of what is to come.
